Traineeship’s variety continues into employment /Local/ZA/Students/Global-Career-New%20career-Students-photo%20Andrew%20Dinh.jpg The chance to experience different parts of the company was a significant factor in Andrew Dinh’s decision to pursue a graduate traineeship. This quest for variety has continued into his career with three roles in 10 years with the company. "The criteria for ASSA ABLOY Australia’s graduate program in 2004 was a match made in heaven. I had the double degree in technical and commercial areas the company was looking for and they offered the chance to explore the various areas of the business that I really needed. At the end of my time at university I did not know exactly what I wanted to do. The project-based rotation component of the two-year graduate program was therefore a key selling point as it promised opportunities to discover areas of interest. I’d advise any student who finds themselves in the same situation to seriously consider a graduate placement. It gives you a chance to assess the career you think you want to pursue while exploring other options. It’s also a great transition from university to work. You are presented with gradual challenges so you grow professionally and personally. And as a trainee you are supported and supervised – your only real responsibilities and accountabilities are to yourself. That of course changes when your “real” job starts! In that respect I’m pleased that my career at ASSA ABLOY has continued to deliver the variety and opportunities that I looked for initially when considering a traineeship. Towards the end of my program I was offered the role of conducting process improvements in the purchasing area. When the person in charge of international purchasing resigned I was thrown in the deep end and took over purchasing as well. It was probably the best way to improve a process! From there I was employed as a purchasing officer and through exposure to supply chain morphed into a supply chain analyst. Next step, and my current position, was purchasing and planning manager for finished goods. As you can see, at ASSA ABLOY there are many opportunities for improvement and I have the flexibility to pursue those of interest. Let’s see where it takes me."
